PERSEIDS METEOR SHOWER SHOWING

PROGRAM DETAILS

Join the San Juan Stargazers Astronomy Club and Chimney Rock Interpretive Association as we watch the Perseid Meteor Shower at Chimney Rock National Monument.  This will be for one night only:  Monday, August 14th.  The gate will open at 7 PM.  You must be there by 7:45 when the gate will be closed and locked.  Bring along with you your favorite lawn chair or blanket, water and maybe a snack of your choice.  Don’t forget a flashlight or headlamp (red, if you have one)!  Early evening activities will be available until the sky is dark enough to see the meteors.  Suitable for all ages but parents must supervise young viewers. We will drive to the upper parking lot for viewing from the best of the dark skies for miles around!  A Parking Attendant will direct you where to turn around.  All cars will be parked on the road facing downhill ready to leave so that car lights do not interfere with anyone’s night vision. Please be careful as you walk from your car to the program, which is just beyond the upper restrooms.   There is NO WALKING AROUND at this upper area as there are dangerous drop-offs in all directions. You can easily walk to go to the restrooms, the program area, the telescope viewing area, and back to your car. These areas are paved. Do not walk on any cement walkways or dirt paths.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Members of the local San Juan Stargazers astronomy club, as well as volunteers of Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, will be on hand to coordinate and enhance this event.
