SUMMARY:Full Moon Program
DESCRIPTION:Each month during the summer\, volunteers light the trail to the mesa top for a full moon program before the twin spires. A speaker tells the story of the people and their likely relationship with the moon\, sun\, and stars. Watch the full moon rise over the eastern mountain peaks to the music of a Native American flute. You’ll be torn between looking West to see the spectacular sunset or focusing on the eastern mountain range to see the first sliver of moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nOn the way to the Great House Pueblo for the program\, the trail rises 200 feet in elevation over one third mile (one way). The trail is unimproved and includes a steep\, rocky section. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a flashlight and water.  All other food and beverages are banned from the mesa top outside of your vehicle. \nThis is a reservations-only program\, recommended for children age 8 and up. Programs often sell out.  Making a reservation through the call center or website is the only way to guarantee a spot on this tour. Programs can reach full capacity prior to  the event but we will accommodate walk-ins if space is available. Booking fees do not apply to walk-ins. \nWEDNESDAY\, JUNE 23RD:\n\nArrive for check-in & drive-plus-hike to program location between 7:00pm – 7:15pm.\nProgram begins at 8:15pm.\nFull Moon Program is approximately 2.5 hours long.\n\nTICKETS:\n\n$20.00 and are considered a non-refundable donation.\nA booking fee applies to each ticket purchased online or through the call center.\n\nBOOK NOW\n

SUMMARY:Night Sky: Our Solar System
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Night Sky Programs at Chimney Rock National Monument offer two different opportunities to observe the stars where the ancient Puebloans did 1\,000 years ago; The Stars & Galaxies Program and the Our Solar System Program. \nThe Our Solar System Program is is timed for when the moon is visible but not fully illuminated; we can enjoy the night sky unimpeded by artificial lighting or the brightness of a full moon\, and see many of the brighter objects that are visible.  The moon is especially enjoyable to view through a telescope because features near the terminator (the boundary between the lit and unlit portions of the moon) stand out in particularly high contrast and are easy to discern. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nFor both programs\, the Hwy 151 Entry Gate will open an hour before sunset for check-in and and instructions for the evening’s event. Guests will proceed to the Amphitheater for the first part of the program\, an introductory talk including topics such as how the ancient people who periodically inhabited the site used the unique landscape of the Chimney Rock area to view the sky\, and what special astronomical events they might have seen. \nAll Night Sky programs are designed to include telescope viewing by attendees\, and we hope restrictions will be lifted in 2021 to allow this activity. But\, since the virus can be spread by moisture of the eye contacting a telescope eye-piece\, we may need to omit this activity for the safety of all.  Also\, weather conditions occasionally prevent telescope viewing. \nIf telescope viewing is planned\, you’ll then drive to the High Mesa parking lot\, where volunteers await with telescopes.  At the viewing area\, each telescope will focus on a different feature and volunteers will change that focus periodically during the viewing time.  Viewing is scheduled to continue until about one hour after maximum darkness.  Guests may depart from the viewing are whenever they choose. \nIf we are not ale to use the telescopes\, expert volunteers will give an expanded talk about how the ancient people who periodically inhabited the site used the unique landscape of the Chimney Rock area to view the sky\, what special astronomical events they might have seen or other topics relevant to this special place.  Bring your questions! \nRemember that at this altitude the nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket or sweater will enable you to remain comfortable while you enjoy the majesty of the night sky at Chimney Rock.  This program is perfect for young families and those with limited mobility. \nGuests must enter through the Hwy 151 entry gate during the check-in period stated below; the gate will be locked at the end of that time. Tickets are $16.00 (adults) and $8.00 (children 5-12) plus booking fee\, and are non-refundable. In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather\, rain checks will be available. For details\, please call the Visitor Cabin (970-883-5359) 9:00 – 4:00 Mountain Time. \nReservations strongly recommended. Limited space. Walk-ins on a first-come\, first-serve basis. \nFRIDAY\, JUNE 18: \n\nArrive for check-in 7:15-7:45pm.\nProgram begins at 8:00pm and ends at 10:00pm.\n\nTICKETS:\n\n$16.00/adult and $8.00/child (5-12)\nConsidered a non-refundable donation.\nA booking fee applies to each ticket purchased online or through the call center.\n\nReservations strongly recommended. SUMMARY:Wildlife of Chimney Rock Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nSouthwest Colorado and the Chimney Rock area have a rich source of wildlife.  Animals live here and travel through the area on their annual migrations.  Why do animals choose to use this area and what makes it so important to them? \nSeveral species of raptors nest in the Chimney Rock area.  What species are these and where do they nest?   Lynx once roamed the surrounding wilderness.  Can you still find lynx in Colorado and if so\, why or why not?  The last grizzly bears in Colorado where killed within sight of Chimney Rock.  The last grizzly succumbed in a battle of life and death between one man and the bear.  What happened\, and was she the last? \nIf these questions arouse a desire to learn more\, join us on the 1 1/2 hour tour.  Stories will be recounted that provide answers to these questions and other narratives of wildlife explored.  We’ll travel through some of these animals’ habitats and learn more about what animals need to survive.  Bring binoculars in the event that we’re lucky enough to see some of these fascinating creatures. \nThe tour will include the Great House and requires negotiation of a steep\, rough trail with exposure to heights and drop-offs.  Binoculars encouraged but not required. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nMaking a reservation through the call center or website is the only way to guarantee a spot on this tour.  In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather\, rain checks will be available.  For details\, please call the Visitor Cabin (970-883-5359) 9:00 – 4:00 Mountain Time. \n\nSeptember 3: Arrive for check-in 7:45am.
