SUMMARY:Lecture: Marcy Cottrell Houle: Peregrines of Chimney Rock: A Flight for Survival and Triumphant Return”
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed wildlife biologist and award-winning author Marcy Cottrell Houle will return to Chimney Rock this fall to share the gripping and inspiring story behind her groundbreaking research on the area’s iconic peregrine falcons. The special lecture\, titled “Peregrines of Chimney Rock: A Flight for Survival and Triumphant Return”\, will take place on Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025\, at 6:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of the Methodist Church\, located at 434 Lewis St.\, Pagosa Springs\, CO.\, 81147. Doors will open at 5:45 PM. \nHoule will recount her extraordinary experiences in the 1970s when\, as a young biologist\, she was tasked with studying the endangered peregrine falcons of Chimney Rock during the early days of the Endangered Species Act. Her four-year study—chronicled in her award-winning memoir Wings for My Flight: The Peregrine Falcons of Chimney Rock—revealed not only the fierce beauty of the falcons but also the intense resistance she faced from a community reluctant to embrace conservation. \n“People didn’t want the falcons—and they didn’t want the biologists either\,” Houle wrote in her book. Her research was met with hostility\, and she and her colleague\, Forest Service partner Anne Potter\, faced threats to their safety. Tragically\, efforts to sabotage their work led to the death of a mother falcon and her three nestlings. Despite the opposition\, Houle’s perseverance helped pave the way for better protections and awareness for birds of prey in the region. \nNow a respected voice in environmental advocacy\, Houle has authored seven award-winning books. Two of her works—Wings for My Flight and The Gift of Caring—received the prestigious Christopher Award for affirming “the highest values of the human spirit.” Her writings have appeared in the “New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Smithsonian Magazine”\, and more. This rare homecoming event offers a firsthand look into a little-known chapter of Chimney Rock’s natural history\, told by the woman who lived it. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the fascinating history of Chimney Rock’s peregrine falcons. Donations are welcome. Canned goods for the church’s food pantry are greatly appreciated. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers the opportunity each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nThanks to LPEA for the Round Up Foundation Grant Award. This support helps fund our free lecture series\, sharing Chimney Rock National Monument’s cultural and natural significance. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest. SUMMARY:MLS Special Lecture with Dr. McKim Malville
DESCRIPTION:“New Light on Chimney Rock: The Sun\, Moon\, and the Great Supernova of 1054″  \nThe magnificent astronomy of Chimney Rock National Monument may have had its start in the decade of the 1050s when the residents of the high mesa discovered both the supernova of 1054 and the standstill moon appearing above their eastern horizon. This talk will discuss the evolution of Chimney Rock into a major ceremonial site by 1093. Of the world’s many places where archaeological evidence of major lunar standstills has been discovered\, Chimney Rock is unique in the depth and breadth of its astronomical and cultural complexities.  \nDr. McKim Malville obtained his BS in physics from Caltech. After spending a year in the Antarctic\, he came to the University of Colorado and got his PhD in solar physics. Kim’s first teaching position was at the University of Michigan. Returning to Boulder he was on the research staff of the High Altitude Observatory of NCAR\, and then he moved back to the University of Colorado where he served as Chairman of the Department of Astro-Geophysics. His research interests have ranged from the aurora\, solar physics\, and\, more recently\, archaeoastronomy. In 1997 he was a member of the team that revealed the world’s oldest known megalithic astronomy at Nabta Playa near Abu Simbel in southern Egypt. In 2003 he was involved in the rediscovery of Llactapata and its sun temple\, previously lost in a cloud forest near Machu Picchu. He is presently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado. \nDr. Melville’s lecture will take place at the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall\, \nlocated at 434 Lewis Street\, Pagosa Springs\, CO.\, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30p.m.) \n(This is a FREE event – no registration is necessary.)

SUMMARY:CRIA Lecture Series Begins with Ron Sutcliffe: “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles”
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 19th \nAs the only natural indicator in the world for the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS)\, the twin sandstone spires at Chimney Rock National Monument create a narrow window of sky where the moon can be seen rising between the two pillars from very specific locations atop the ridge every 18.6 years. In preparation for the MLS rise-through-the-spires events and the MLS Special Programs to come in fall 2023\, CRIA volunteers have been diligently performing celestial surveys which indicate the observational cycle of the MLS event has begun.  The star Elnath heralds the beginning of the three-year cycle and will also rise between the spires as a precursor to these events. \nChimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) invites the public to learn about the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS) and the practice of naked eye astronomy at the CRIA Lecture Series on Tuesday\, April 19th.  The lecture will take place at 7:00 PM at the Methodist Church located at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Join us as author and CRIA volunteer Ron Sutcliffe discusses “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles.” Ron Sutcliffe is the author of Moon Tracks\, a guide to understanding the observed patterns of the sun and moon and how those patterns may have been employed by ancient astronomers\, especially those of Chimney Rock. \nGuests at this Lecture will learn about the MLS astronomical event and what was viewed at Chimney Rock a thousand years ago by ancient Puebloans.  The presentation will also offer a show and tell of the photography taken at public programs during the last MLS 3-year season (2004-2007.) If weather permits\, guests will have the opportunity to gather outside to view Elnath in the constellation Taurus while participating in a discussion about the indications for the MLS by learning how the stars are surveyed through naked eye astronomy. \nChimney Rock National Monument will open for the 2022 season on Sunday\, May 15th. CRIA sponsors special events at Chimney Rock including the Night Sky Programs\, Full Moon Program\, Sunrise Programs\, Geology Program\, Birding at Chimney Rock\, Flora of Chimney Rock Mysteries of Chimney Rock Tours and the always fun and FREE Life at Chimney Rock Festival. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers several opportunities each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest.  For more information see the CRIA website at www.chimneyrockco.org  or call (970) 731-7133. \n  \n  \n
