SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archaeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). The tour length includes 30 minutes for hiking to and from the Great House. \nTICKETS\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. Please note that the tour will begin promptly at the end of the check-in period\, so it will not be possible to accommodate late arrivals. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up\, $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 are free\, and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the tour. \nThis program is rarely at full capacity prior to the event\, and we will accommodate walk-ins if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Tour tickets can be purchased directly from the guide with cash only. Note: if no one has signed up for the tour by online reservation within the allotted time frame\, the tour will not run. In such a case\, walk-ins will not be possible. Refunds will be issued only for cancelled – not modified – tours/programs. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nProgram Dates/Times: \nTuesday Late Afternoons/Evenings: \nMay 19\, 26 \nJune 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, 30 \nJuly 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 \nAugust 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 \nSeptember 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 29 \nCheck-in: 4:45 – 5:00 PM \nProgram: 5:00 – 7:30 PM \n           Capacity: 25 \nSaturday Mornings: \nMay 16\, 23\, 30 \nJune 13\, 20\, 27 \nJuly 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 \nAugust 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 29 \nSeptember 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 \nOctober 3\, 10 \nCheck-in: 7:45 – 8:00 AM \nProgram: 8:00 – 10:30 AM \n          Capacity: 25 \n  \nBOOK NOW

At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! Of special note\, the tour will be conducted in the quiet off-hours of the Monument. The hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Refunds will be issued only for canceled – not modified – tours/programs. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nDates: \nWednesday late afternoons:   \nJune 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 \nJuly 1\, 8\, 15\, 22\, 29 \nAugust 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 \nSeptember 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, 30 \nOctober 7\, 14 \nCheck in: 4:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nTour: 5:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. \n                Capacity: 25 \nFriday mornings: \nJune 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 \nJuly 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 31 \nAugust 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 \nSeptember 4\, 11\, 18\, 25 \nOctober 2\, 9 \nCheck-in: 7:00 a.m. – 7:15 a.m. \nTour: 7:15 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. \nCapacity: 25 \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. SUMMARY:Flute Music at Twilight Program
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMS DETAILS \nThis program is offered once a month on Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during quiet off-hours of the Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park.  A 2.5-mile drive from the Visitor Center leads to the upper parking lot where this Native American musical program takes place. Prior to the event\, visitors will take a 1/3-mile guided walk along the paved loop through a Mesa Village. The tour provides excellent views of several excavated structures along with discussion of the various aspects of their uses. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nUpon returning to the parking area\, as dusk progresses and stars begin to appear\, visitors will be treated to the haunting melodies of a flute played by our own Charles Martinez. Charles\, a Native American\, makes his flutes and composes his music. This affords a wonderful opportunity to gaze in wonder at the heavenly skies and ponder what significance they had for the Ancestral Puebloans when they looked up at the same night skies 1\,000 years ago. There is a limited amount of seating on wooden and stone benches; so folding chairs are suggested along with flashlights and warm clothing suitable for cool nights. Recommended for ages 4 and up. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. Please note that the tour will begin promptly at the end of the check-in period\, so it will not be possible to accommodate late arrivals. SUMMARY:Night Sky Program
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nChimney Rock National Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park\, is a quiet\, wonderful place to observe the night sky\, far away from city lights and distracting noises. And at a lofty altitude of 7\,200 feet\, the Monument affords a beautiful night sky. Held one night each month\, this program explores why people for generations have looked at the night sky in awe and wonder. It features discussions about the ancient Puebloans’ connection to the night sky\, and how even today\, people are fascinated with the dark sky visible from this special spot. Interactive talks cover constellations\, galaxies\, and observable planets\, and their locations on each specific night. Bring binoculars for personal viewing as telescopes may or may not be available. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nAt this altitude\, nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket and other gear will allow you to be comfortable. A flashlight with a red lens covering is an added bonus. This is a “rain or shine” presentation. If weather is inclement\, the program will be moved inside. Not recommended for children under 5. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. SUMMARY:Sunrise at Chimney Rock Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis special Sunrise at Chimney Rock\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park\, is offered on Monday mornings at the times shown below.  Please note that times will differ throughout the season.  This engaging two-hour tour will start by watching the sun rise\, with a 360-degree panoramic view\, from the top of the mesa. Following sunrise\, the tour will begin with the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! The tour then takes visitors along both the Great House Trail and the Mesa Village Trail to learn specifics about the structures along the way – their significance and uses. Several topics will be emphasized and aimed specifically at interpreting the history and significance of Chimney Rock and the ancestral Puebloans who inhabited the area over 1\,000 years ago. The tour also delves into the connection of Chimney Rock to the greater Chaco Culture\, the significance of the mesa top Great House Pueblo\, and the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants of Chimney Rock. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nOf special note\, the tour will be conducted in the quiet off-hours of the Monument.
