Highlights of the tour will be a discussion of the plants and animals the Puebloans gathered and hunted\, what crops they farmed\, and how they utilized them in their daily lives over 1\,000 years ago. You will have the opportunity to hold ancient pottery\, touch the seeds they planted\, and experience the amazing strength of their yucca fiber ropes. You will also learn how these small villages interacted with Chaco Canyon\, the epicenter of the Chacoan culture. This tour is rated Easy and suitable for visitors of all ages and physical abilities. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nCheck-in is at the Gift Shop from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up and $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 are free\, and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation. \nMaking a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Sunrise Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice Tour is held once a season at Chimney Rock National Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park. The 2026 tour is held three days:  June 20\, 21 and 22. Come to this special place and watch the sun rise over the San Juan Mountains as the summer announces itself on the longest day of the year.  With a 360-degree vantage point and the hush of early morning in the wilderness\, the rising sun witnessed from the Great House Pueblo is a most unique experience.  Such celestial events were of utmost importance to the Ancient Ones.  We will discuss the significance the solstice played in the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans over 1\,000 years ago\, as well as the Chacoan relationship to this site. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nIt is a 3-mile drive to the trailhead and a 30 to 45-minute uphill hike to the Great House Pueblo in pre-dawn darkness. The hike may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet.  Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill).  At the end of the trail\, visitors will be rewarded with a panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge.  They will also enjoy the closest view possible from the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Bring a good flashlight or headlamp and dress appropriately. Sunrise is at 6:08 a.m. with the return hike down the trail taking place in daylight.   \nPROGRAM DETAILS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archaeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. SUMMARY:Night Sky Program
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM\nChimney Rock National Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park\, is a quiet\, wonderful place to observe the night sky\, far away from city lights and distracting noises. And at a lofty altitude of 7\,200 feet\, the Monument affords a beautiful night sky. Held one night each month\, this program explores why people for generations have looked at the night sky in awe and wonder. It features discussions about the ancient Puebloans’ connection to the night sky\, and how even today\, people are fascinated with the dark sky visible from this special spot. Interactive talks cover constellations\, galaxies\, and observable planets\, and their locations on each specific night. Bring binoculars for personal viewing as telescopes may or may not be available. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nAt this altitude\, nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket and other gear will allow you to be comfortable. A flashlight with a red lens covering is an added bonus. This is a “rain or shine” presentation. If weather is inclement\, the program will be moved inside. Not recommended for children under 5. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. Please note that the tour will begin promptly at the end of the check-in period\, so it will not be possible to accommodate late arrivals. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up\, $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 are free\, and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation. Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the tour. \nThis program is rarely at full capacity prior to the event\, and we will accommodate walk-ins if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Tour tickets can be purchased at the Gift Shop. Note: if no one has signed up for the tour by online reservation within the allotted time frame\, the tour will not run. In such a case\, walk-ins will not be possible.
SUMMARY:Lecture: Dr. Andrew Gulliford: "The Native Americans of the Chimney Rock Area"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Andrew Gulliford: “The Native Americans of the Chimney Rock Area”\nTuesday\, June 23\, 2026\nThis engaging program explores the prehistoric and historic Native American peoples of the Chimney Rock and Four Corners region\, tracing their origins\, migrations\, interactions\, and enduring cultural connections to the landscape. \nAndy will examine cultures ranging from Paleo and Archaic peoples to the Ancestral Puebloans\, as well as the Fremont\, Mogollon\, and Hohokam traditions. The lecture also highlights later historic tribes including the Ute\, Navajo\, Jicarilla Apache\, and others\, exploring their timelines\, territories\, and relationships with one another. Special attention will be given to cultural ties that remain visible on the land today\, including evidence such as culturally modified trees and connections to communities like Taos Pueblo . \nThis presentation offers a deeper understanding of the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape the Chimney Rock landscape. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the fascinating history of Chimney Rock’s peregrine falcons. Donations are welcome. Canned goods for the church’s food pantry are greatly appreciated. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers the opportunity each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nThanks to LPEA for the Round Up Foundation Grant Award. This support helps fund our free lecture series\, sharing Chimney Rock National Monument’s cultural and natural significance. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest. SUMMARY:Guided Great House Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Guided Great House Tour is a personalized tour that really brings the Monument to life.  It is offered daily at 10:30 a.m. each morning. This guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.  The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \n  \nCheck-in is at the Gift Shop at 10:00 a.m.  The tour begins at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up and $10.00 for ages 5-12 and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation.  Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs. \nTICKETS\nMaking a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour.
Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). The tour length includes 30 minutes for hiking to and from the Great House. \nTICKETS\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour.
