SUMMARY:Night Sky: Our Solar System
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\n\n\n\nThis program is timed for when the moon is wonderfully visible in the early night sky. That makes it so we can enjoy the moon and several planets along with some deep sky objects that are beyond our galaxy that we can see with the telescopes. We hope you will appreciate how rare this opportunity is and how fortunate you are to experience it. Treasure it\, along with experiencing an area where the ancient people actually lived and daily and nightly walked around.  There are three parts to our program starting with a live brief history of Chimney Rock\, followed by a video presentation about the ancient people and explaining why astronomy was such an important part of their lives. The third part of the program is a recorded power point presentation that gives understanding of our solar system. There will also be interesting details about our moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nEveryone bring your questions\, fold up chairs\, a flashlight\, blankets or pillows to the Hura Dura\, or paved viewing and seating area. . Remember that at this altitude the nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket and sweater will enable you to remain comfortable while you enjoy the majesty of the night sky at Chimney Rock. Guests must enter through the Hwy 151 entry gate during the check-in period stated below; the gate will be locked at the end of that time. \nPROGRAM DATES/TIMES\n\n8/25: Check-in: 6:45 – 7:00 PM Program: 8:15 PM\n9/22: Check-in: 6:15 – 6:30 PM Program: 7:45 PM\n\n\n\n\n  \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:CRIA Lecture Series Begins with Ron Sutcliffe: “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles”
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 19th \nAs the only natural indicator in the world for the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS)\, the twin sandstone spires at Chimney Rock National Monument create a narrow window of sky where the moon can be seen rising between the two pillars from very specific locations atop the ridge every 18.6 years. In preparation for the MLS rise-through-the-spires events and the MLS Special Programs to come in fall 2023\, CRIA volunteers have been diligently performing celestial surveys which indicate the observational cycle of the MLS event has begun.  The star Elnath heralds the beginning of the three-year cycle and will also rise between the spires as a precursor to these events. \nChimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) invites the public to learn about the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS) and the practice of naked eye astronomy at the CRIA Lecture Series on Tuesday\, April 19th.  The lecture will take place at 7:00 PM at the Methodist Church located at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Join us as author and CRIA volunteer Ron Sutcliffe discusses “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles.” Ron Sutcliffe is the author of Moon Tracks\, a guide to understanding the observed patterns of the sun and moon and how those patterns may have been employed by ancient astronomers\, especially those of Chimney Rock. \nGuests at this Lecture will learn about the MLS astronomical event and what was viewed at Chimney Rock a thousand years ago by ancient Puebloans.  The presentation will also offer a show and tell of the photography taken at public programs during the last MLS 3-year season (2004-2007.) If weather permits\, guests will have the opportunity to gather outside to view Elnath in the constellation Taurus while participating in a discussion about the indications for the MLS by learning how the stars are surveyed through naked eye astronomy. \nChimney Rock National Monument will open for the 2022 season on Sunday\, May 15th. CRIA sponsors special events at Chimney Rock including the Night Sky Programs\, Full Moon Program\, Sunrise Programs\, Geology Program\, Birding at Chimney Rock\, Flora of Chimney Rock Mysteries of Chimney Rock Tours and the always fun and FREE Life at Chimney Rock Festival. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers several opportunities each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest.  For more information see the CRIA website at www.chimneyrockco.org  or call (970) 731-7133. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Night Sky: Our Solar System
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Night Sky Programs at Chimney Rock National Monument offer two different opportunities to observe the stars where the ancient Puebloans did 1\,000 years ago; The Stars & Galaxies Program and the Our Solar System Program. \nThe Our Solar System Program is is timed for when the moon is visible but not fully illuminated; we can enjoy the night sky unimpeded by artificial lighting or the brightness of a full moon\, and see many of the brighter objects that are visible.  The moon is especially enjoyable to view through a telescope because features near the terminator (the boundary between the lit and unlit portions of the moon) stand out in particularly high contrast and are easy to discern. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nFor both programs\, the Hwy 151 Entry Gate will open an hour before sunset for check-in and and instructions for the evening’s event. Guests will proceed to the Amphitheater for the first part of the program\, an introductory talk including topics such as how the ancient people who periodically inhabited the site used the unique landscape of the Chimney Rock area to view the sky\, and what special astronomical events they might have seen. \nAll Night Sky programs are designed to include telescope viewing by attendees\, and we hope restrictions will be lifted in 2021 to allow this activity. But\, since the virus can be spread by moisture of the eye contacting a telescope eye-piece\, we may need to omit this activity for the safety of all.  Also\, weather conditions occasionally prevent telescope viewing. \nIf telescope viewing is planned\, you’ll then drive to the High Mesa parking lot\, where volunteers await with telescopes.  At the viewing area\, each telescope will focus on a different feature and volunteers will change that focus periodically during the viewing time.  Viewing is scheduled to continue until about one hour after maximum darkness.  Guests may depart from the viewing are whenever they choose. \nIf we are not ale to use the telescopes\, expert volunteers will give an expanded talk about how the ancient people who periodically inhabited the site used the unique landscape of the Chimney Rock area to view the sky\, what special astronomical events they might have seen or other topics relevant to this special place.  Bring your questions! \nRemember that at this altitude the nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket or sweater will enable you to remain comfortable while you enjoy the majesty of the night sky at Chimney Rock.  This program is perfect for young families and those with limited mobility. \nGuests must enter through the Hwy 151 entry gate during the check-in period stated below; the gate will be locked at the end of that time. SUMMARY:Wildlife of Chimney Rock Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nSouthwest Colorado and the Chimney Rock area have a rich source of wildlife.  Animals live here and travel through the area on their annual migrations.  Why do animals choose to use this area and what makes it so important to them? \nSeveral species of raptors nest in the Chimney Rock area.  What species are these and where do they nest?   Lynx once roamed the surrounding wilderness.  Can you still find lynx in Colorado and if so\, why or why not?  The last grizzly bears in Colorado where killed within sight of Chimney Rock.  The last grizzly succumbed in a battle of life and death between one man and the bear.  What happened\, and was she the last? \nIf these questions arouse a desire to learn more\, join us on the 1 1/2 hour tour.  Stories will be recounted that provide answers to these questions and other narratives of wildlife explored.  We’ll travel through some of these animals’ habitats and learn more about what animals need to survive.  Bring binoculars in the event that we’re lucky enough to see some of these fascinating creatures. \nThe tour will include the Great House and requires negotiation of a steep\, rough trail with exposure to heights and drop-offs.  Binoculars encouraged but not required. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nMaking a reservation through the call center or website is the only way to guarantee a spot on this tour.  In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather\, rain checks will be available.  For details\, please call the Visitor Cabin (970-883-5359) 9:00 – 4:00 Mountain Time. \n\nSeptember 3: Arrive for check-in 7:45am.
