SUMMARY:Lecture: Dr. J. McKim Malville: Exploring Astronomy and Culture at Chimney Rock
DESCRIPTION:The Chimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) is honored to host a special lecture with renowned archaeoastronomer and physicist Dr. J. McKim “Kim” Malville\, titled Exploring Astronomy and Culture at Chimney Rock. The event will take place on Friday\, October 10\, 2025\, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Archuleta County Extension Building\, located at 344 US-84\, Pagosa Springs\, CO 81147. \nDr. Malville\, professor emeritus of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder\, has devoted decades to studying sacred sites across the globe—from Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde to Egypt\, Peru\, and India. In 1988\, he and his team became the first in nearly 900 years to observe the Major Lunar Standstill moon rising between the spires of Chimney Rock National Monument. Since then\, his groundbreaking research has illuminated the astronomical and ceremonial significance of this ancient Ancestral Puebloan site. \nIn this illuminating lecture\, Dr. Malville will explore what we’ve learned through three Major Lunar Standstill cycles about the intersection of astronomy\, architecture\, and spiritual life at Chimney Rock. He will discuss the evolution of ceremonial practices on the High Mesa—from solstice sunrises to the 1054 supernova—and the collaboration between local communities and Chacoan masons that led to the construction of the Great Houses that still awes modern visitors. \nThis lecture offers a rare opportunity to hear from one of the leading scholars in archaeoastronomy\, whose work helped establish Chimney Rock’s place as a site of international cultural and scientific importance. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated and help support CRIA’s ongoing educational programming. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers the opportunity each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nThanks to LPEA for the Round Up Foundation Grant Award. This support helps fund our free lecture series\, sharing Chimney Rock National Monument’s cultural and natural significance. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest. SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). The tour length includes 30 minutes for hiking to and from the Great House. \nTICKETS\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. SUMMARY:Major Lunar Standstill
DESCRIPTION:  \nPROGRAM DETAILS \nMost people are familiar with the Moon’s cycle and how its shape changes from crescent to full\, and its rising position fluctuates along the horizon. However\, unknown to many\, the Moon has a much longer cycle called the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS). Every 18-19 years\, the Moon’s tilted orbit aligns with the Earth’s axis\, bringing it to its farthest Northern or Southern rising positions. At Chimney Rock National Monument\, throughout this Major Lunar Standstill alignment\, the Moon dramatically rises between the impressive rock pinnacles — Companion Rock and Chimney Rock. It is a timely\, but very short-lived event. A thousand years ago\, when the Ancient Puebloan people built the Great House and other ceremonial spaces at Chimney Rock\, they did so with the purpose\, as many of today’s scholars believe\, to view this rare and spectacular event. \nTwo consecutive September and one October night events will be held at the Chimney Rock National Monument Amphitheater to explore the current Major Lunar Standstill at this important Native American site and its relationship to Stonehenge and other worldwide locations. These late-night presentations will feature telescopes and stargazing under the Monument’s majestic dark skies\, presentations on astronomy\, archaeology and culture from leading experts\, Native American music; and\, most importantly\, a live-streamed viewing of the Moon rising between the natural pinnacles. The MLS season is drawing to a close after 2025. This dramatic moonrise won’t be seen again for 18 years. \nBecause access to the upper area of the Monument is restricted for safety concerns\, these events will be held in the accessible\, outdoor Amphitheater near the Visitor Center. And there\, after an informative program preceding the event\, the long awaited and anticipated rise of the Moon between the pinnacles will be shared via satellite from our crew on the upper mesa. \nOn Saturday\, September 13th\, check-in will be at the Visitor Center kiosk from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Amphitheater program will begin at 10:45 pm for presentations by guest speakers. The live stream of the moonrise will take place at 11:30 pm. The event will then conclude at about 11:45 pm. \nOn Sunday\, September 14th\, check-in will be at the Visitor Center kiosk from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. The Amphitheater program will begin at 11:45 pm. The live-streamed moonrise will take place at 12:30 am. The event will then conclude at about 12:45 am. \nOn Saturday\, October 11th\, check-in will be at the Visitor Center kiosk from 8:30 pm to 9:15 pm.  The Amphitheater program will begin at 9:30 pm for presentations by guest speakers.  The live stream of the moonrise will take place at 10:20 pm.  The event will conclude shortly after the moonrise. \nPlease dress warmly for these late-night events and consider bringing blankets and cushions for your comfort on the stone seats. No alcohol\, smoking/vaping\, or drugs — only a “once in a lifetime” experience to be had in our beautiful\, natural setting.   This program is not suitable for dogs\, with the exception of certified service dogs. Come join us in celebrating this rare event. The next Major Lunar Standstill season won’t happen for another 18 years! \nThis MLS event may be modified or canceled due to weather or conditions outside of our control. If the event is modified\, but not cancelled\, no refunds will be issued. If the entire event is canceled\, refunds can only be issued by contacting Recreation.gov which issued the reservation. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nTickets are $25 for adults\, $12 for ages 5-12\, and free for those under 5. Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website (www.recreation.gov) or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this program\, since seating is limited. Recreation.gov charges a $1 reservation fee that is non-refundable. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the program. Walk-ins will be accommodated if space is available. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for ages 5–12 and will be sold on a first come\, first served basis. \nCapacity: 150 \nBOOK NOW
