DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nTHIS TOUR IS OFFERED ON TUESDAY\, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY \nThis guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.  The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \nCheck-in is at the plaza kiosk at 10:00 a.m.  The tour begins at 10:30 a.m.  \nTICKETS\nTickets are $12.00 for ages 13 and up and $6.00 for ages 5-12.  Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). The tour length includes 30 minutes for hiking to and from the Great House. \nTICKETS\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Be on the look-out for the peregrine falcons nesting on the left side of Companion Rock! Bring your cameras for some amazing photos. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe tour is available by reservation for up to 10 people and walk-ins are allowed if room allows. CRIA invites you to a unique perspective in a unique place to feel the special connection between Chaco Canyon and Chimney Rock.   More than 1000 years ago the skies threaded these people together.  Why? It is a question that after years of study remains a question\, but also one that invites answers.   An award winning film\, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon by  Anna Sofaer reveals the brilliant astronomy of the ancient Puebloans – how the buildings were located and oriented to the sun and moon to highlight these complex relationships.  This long-awaited sequel to Anna Sofaer’s classic film THE SUN DAGGER\, which changed our perception of America’s earliest Native Americans\, is narrated by Robert Redford and produced by The Solstice Project. \nBefore the viewing of the film\, Dr Erica Ellingson\, Professor at the University of Colorado\, Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences\, will give a special presentation.  Her conversation about the connections between Chaco and Chimney Rock will be the springboard for our understanding of the ancients’ dependence upon the skies.  So simple. So complex. An enigma even today.  Dr. Ellingson is an astrophysicist who delights in using telescopes large and small\, in space and at observatories around the world. Her work includes investigating galaxy clusters\, the evolution of galaxies\, black holes\, and the mysterious cosmological forces of dark matter and dark energy. Her research also includes historical and archaeo-astronomy and she is an editor with the international Journal of Skyscape Archaeology. She also teaches and produces educational programs at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado and is an astronomical consultant with the US National Park Service. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe Chimney Rock National Monument gate will open at 6:00 pm.  Dr. Ellingson will speak at 6:30pm.  The Mystery of Chaco Canyon (56 minutes) will be shown after the lecture.  Tickets are available at www.Recreation.gov for $15 (ages 13 and older) and $8 (ages 6-12.) Kids 5 years and younger are free.  Tickets will also be available at the Chimney Rock National Monument Gift Shop the evening of the event. Light refreshments will be available.  Since this event will take place in the amphitheater\, you may want to bring a cushion or blanket for a more comfortable viewing experience.  A flashlight is also suggested.
