SUMMARY:Guided Great House Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Guided Great House Tour is a personalized tour that really brings the Monument to life. It is offered daily at 10:30 a.m. each morning. This guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \nCheck-in is at the Gift Shop at 10:00 a.m. The tour begins at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $12.00 for ages 13 and up and $6.00 for ages 5-12 and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation. Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs. \nTICKETS\nMaking a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the tour. Walk-ins will be accommodated if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Tickets can be purchased at the Gift Shop. Note: if no one has signed up for the tour by online reservation within the allotted time frame\, the tour will not run. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. Refunds will be issued only for cancelled – not modified – tours/programs. \nThe USFS Activity Pass fee must be paid (or applicable federal pass used) since this program occurs during the Monument’s regular daily opening hours. \nDates:\nMay 15 through 31\nJune 1 to 6\, and June 9 to 30\nJuly 1 through 31\nAugust 1 through 31\nSeptember 1 through 30\nOctober 1 through 15 \nCheck-in: 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.\nTour: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nCapacity: 20 \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Lecture: David Bouquet\, "Rock Art in the Southwest"
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled – we are working on rescheduling the lecture. \nRock Art in the Southwest. \nJoin local geology and archaeology enthusiast David Bouquet for a free public lecture\, “Rock Art in the Southwest”\, on Wednesday\, June 25th at the Pagosa Methodist Church Fellowship Hall\, 434 Lewis St\, Pagosa Springs\, CO 81147. Doors open at 5:45 PM\, and the lecture begins promptly at 6:00 PM. \nThis engaging presentation will introduce various types of rock art to showcase some of the oldest known examples from around the globe\, as well as providing a visual journey of Puebloan rock art sites across the American Southwest\, with a map highlighting their presence in Monuments\, National and State Parks\, and lands managed by the Forest Service and BLM. \nThe lecture will also delve into the important work of the Northwest New Mexico Site Steward Program\, which helps protect culturally significant locations that lack formal preservation. Attendees will be treated to stunning photographic examples of rock art panels from prominent sites including Hovenweep National Monument\, Bears Ears National Monument\, Canyon de Chelly National Monument\, Chaco Culture National Historic Park\, and Mesa Verde National Park. Of special note will be a discussion addressing the irreplaceable Puebloan and Navajo rock art lost during the creation of Navajo Lake in 1962. The presentation will conclude with a conversation about potential rock art at Chimney Rock National Monument\, just outside Pagosa Springs. \nA short Q&A session will follow the approximately one-hour lecture. \nDavid Bouquet has volunteered at Chimney Rock National Monument for the past five years. He holds degrees in Geology from Louisiana State University and the University of Kansas\, with a focus on sedimentary rocks. His passion for the connection between geology and archaeology has driven him to explore numerous Puebloan petroglyph sites throughout the Four Corners region. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the fascinating history etched into the stone landscapes of the Southwest. \nThe lecture is free to attend; however\, donations are welcome. Additionally\, canned goods for the church’s food pantry are greatly appreciated. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers the opportunity each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest. For more information see the CRIA website at www.chimneyrockco.org or call (970) 731-7133.
