DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nTHIS TOUR IS OFFERED ON TUESDAY\, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY \nThis guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.  The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \nCheck-in is at the plaza kiosk at 10:00 a.m.  The tour begins at 10:30 a.m.  \nTICKETS\nTickets are $12.00 for ages 13 and up and $6.00 for ages 5-12.  Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. SUMMARY:Flute Music at Twilight Under the Pinnacles
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMS DETAILS \nThis program is offered on select Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during quiet off-hours of the Monument. It begins from the amphitheater with a relaxing 1/4-mile walk up the nature trail\, providing visitors with an experience of the natural environment along with beautiful views of the two pinnacles. Upon returning to the amphitheater\, the program resumes with an informative lecture on topics specific to Chimney Rock such as the Ancestral Puebloan culture\, archeoastronomy theories\, the Major Lunar Standstill\, geology\, etc. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nAs dusk progresses and stars begin to appear\, you will be treated to the haunting melodies of a native American flute played by our own Charles Martinez. Visitors will gaze in wonder at the heavenly skies and ponder what significance they had for the Ancestral Puebloans when they looked up at the same night skies 1\,000 years ago. Recommended for ages 4 and up. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be promptly locked at the end of that time. Tickets are $20.00 for ages 13 and up\, $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 are free. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). The tour length includes 30 minutes for hiking to and from the Great House. \nTICKETS\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. DESCRIPTION:Chimney Rock Interpretive Association Presents: The Mystery of Chaco Canyon-\nA Look into the Archaeoastronomical Connection between Chaco Culture National Historical Park  and Chimney Rock National Monument\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\nChimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) is proud to present a viewing of The Mystery of Chaco Canyon on Saturday\, September 16th at the Chimney Rock National Monument Amphitheater. CRIA invites you to a unique perspective in a unique place to feel the special connection between Chaco Canyon and Chimney Rock.   More than 1000 years ago the skies threaded these people together.  Why? It is a question that after years of study remains a question\, but also one that invites answers.   An award winning film\, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon by  Anna Sofaer reveals the brilliant astronomy of the ancient Puebloans – how the buildings were located and oriented to the sun and moon to highlight these complex relationships.  This long-awaited sequel to Anna Sofaer’s classic film THE SUN DAGGER\, which changed our perception of America’s earliest Native Americans\, is narrated by Robert Redford and produced by The Solstice Project. \nBefore the viewing of the film\, Dr Erica Ellingson\, Professor at the University of Colorado\, Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences\, will give a special presentation.  Her conversation about the connections between Chaco and Chimney Rock will be the springboard for our understanding of the ancients’ dependence upon the skies.  So simple. So complex. An enigma even today.  Dr. Ellingson is an astrophysicist who delights in using telescopes large and small\, in space and at observatories around the world. Her work includes investigating galaxy clusters\, the evolution of galaxies\, black holes\, and the mysterious cosmological forces of dark matter and dark energy. Her research also includes historical and archaeo-astronomy and she is an editor with the international Journal of Skyscape Archaeology. She also teaches and produces educational programs at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado and is an astronomical consultant with the US National Park Service. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe Chimney Rock National Monument gate will open at 6:00 pm.  Dr. Ellingson will speak at 6:30pm.  The Mystery of Chaco Canyon (56 minutes) will be shown after the lecture.  Tickets are available at www.Recreation.gov for $15 (ages 13 and older) and $8 (ages 6-12.) Kids 5 years and younger are free.  Tickets will also be available at the Chimney Rock National Monument Gift Shop the evening of the event. Light refreshments will be available.  Since this event will take place in the amphitheater\, you may want to bring a cushion or blanket for a more comfortable viewing experience.  A flashlight is also suggested.

We hope you will appreciate how rare this opportunity is and how fortunate you are to experience it. Treasure it\, along with experiencing an area where the ancient people actually lived and daily and nightly walked around.  There are three parts to our program starting with a live brief history of Chimney Rock\, followed by a video presentation about the ancient people and explaining why astronomy was such an important part of their lives. The third part of the program is a recorded power point presentation that gives understanding of our solar system. There will also be interesting details about our moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nEveryone bring your questions\, fold up chairs\, a flashlight\, blankets or pillows to the Hura Dura\, or paved viewing and seating area. . Remember that at this altitude the nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket and sweater will enable you to remain comfortable while you enjoy the majesty of the night sky at Chimney Rock. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Sunrise Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Solstice Tour is held once a season at Chimney Rock National Monument. Because this event is such a wondrous experience\, the tour is offered not just on the solstice itself\, but on each day preceding and following the solstice. The 2024 tour offerings are Wednesday\, June 19; Thursday\, June 20 (Summer Solstice); and Friday\, June 21. Come to this special place and watch the sun rise over the San Juan Mountains as the summer announces itself on the longest day of the year.  With a 360-degree vantage point and the hush of early morning in the wilderness\, the rising sun witnessed from the Great House Pueblo is a most unique experience.  Such celestial events were of utmost importance to the Ancient Ones\, and we will discuss the significance the solstice played in the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nIt is a 3-mile drive to the trailhead and a 30 to 45-minute uphill hike to the Great House Pueblo in pre-dawn darkness. The hike may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet.  Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill).  At the end of the trail\, visitors will be rewarded with a panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge.  They will also enjoy the closest view possible from the two pinnacles:  Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Bring a good flashlight and dress appropriately. Sunrise is at 6:07 a.m. with the return hike down the trail taking place in daylight. \nPROGRAM DETAILS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate from 4:30 a.m. to 4:45 a.m.  The tour takes place from 4:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.  Please adhere to the check-in timeline.  The gate will be promptly locked at the end of that time. Tickets are $20.00 for ages 13 and up\, $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 free.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or its call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour.  Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure the tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended.  Reservations will be cut off 12 hours before the start of the tour. Most tours are at full capacity prior to the event\, but walk-ins will be accommodated if space is available.  They will be accepted on a first come\, first served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Tickets can be purchased directly from the guide with cash only.  Note:  if no one has signed up for the tour by online reservation within the allotted time frame\, the tour will not run. SUMMARY:CRIA Lecture Series Begins with Ron Sutcliffe: “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles”
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 19th \nAs the only natural indicator in the world for the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS)\, the twin sandstone spires at Chimney Rock National Monument create a narrow window of sky where the moon can be seen rising between the two pillars from very specific locations atop the ridge every 18.6 years. In preparation for the MLS rise-through-the-spires events and the MLS Special Programs to come in fall 2023\, CRIA volunteers have been diligently performing celestial surveys which indicate the observational cycle of the MLS event has begun.  The star Elnath heralds the beginning of the three-year cycle and will also rise between the spires as a precursor to these events. \nChimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) invites the public to learn about the Major Lunar Standstill (MLS) and the practice of naked eye astronomy at the CRIA Lecture Series on Tuesday\, April 19th.  The lecture will take place at 7:00 PM at the Methodist Church located at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Join us as author and CRIA volunteer Ron Sutcliffe discusses “Lunar Phases through the Pinnacles.” Ron Sutcliffe is the author of Moon Tracks\, a guide to understanding the observed patterns of the sun and moon and how those patterns may have been employed by ancient astronomers\, especially those of Chimney Rock. \nGuests at this Lecture will learn about the MLS astronomical event and what was viewed at Chimney Rock a thousand years ago by ancient Puebloans.  The presentation will also offer a show and tell of the photography taken at public programs during the last MLS 3-year season (2004-2007.) If weather permits\, guests will have the opportunity to gather outside to view Elnath in the constellation Taurus while participating in a discussion about the indications for the MLS by learning how the stars are surveyed through naked eye astronomy. \nChimney Rock National Monument will open for the 2022 season on Sunday\, May 15th. CRIA sponsors special events at Chimney Rock including the Night Sky Programs\, Full Moon Program\, Sunrise Programs\, Geology Program\, Birding at Chimney Rock\, Flora of Chimney Rock Mysteries of Chimney Rock Tours and the always fun and FREE Life at Chimney Rock Festival. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers several opportunities each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest.  For more information see the CRIA website at www.chimneyrockco.org  or call (970) 731-7133. \n  \n  \n
