SUMMARY:Guided Great House Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nTHIS TOUR IS OFFERED ON TUESDAY\, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY \nThis guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.  The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \nCheck-in is at the plaza kiosk at 10:00 a.m.  The tour begins at 10:30 a.m.  \nTICKETS\nTickets are $12.00 for ages 13 and up and $6.00 for ages 5-12.  Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. SUMMARY:Life at Chimney Rock Festival
DESCRIPTION:FESTIVAL DETAILS \nChimney Rock Interpretive Association invites you to our yearly Life at Chimney Rock Festival held at Chimney Rock National Monument on Saturday and Sunday\, June 1st and 2nd\, from 10:00am to 4:00 pm each day. This year the Forest Service has announced that the entire event will be a Fee Free festival.  Family activities and interactive demonstrations of the skills of the Ancients will be led by CRIA volunteers and will include pounding yucca\, making coil pottery\, creating rock art\, weaving\, corn grinding\, and throwing a spear with an atlatl. Visitors can learn about astronomy and dendrochronology\, try tasting a sample of Anasazi beans and get a close-up view of a peregrine falcon. Food vendors will have a variety of lunch items and drinks for sale including fry bread and frito pie. \nArtists at this year’s Native American Market will be selling pottery\, jewelry\, paintings\, wood carvings\, andother art. Vendors are from the Pueblos of Acoma\, Laguna\, Santo Domingo\, and Santa Clara as well as the Navajo\, Jicarilla Apache\, and Southern Ute Nations. Some will be demonstrating their crafts\, and all are willing to share their knowledge and skills with visitors. Dance groups will be performing twice daily in the amphitheater. \nTwo Native American dance groups\, the Oak Canyon Dancers from Jemez Pueblo and  the Roach Family Dancers\, will be performing at this years’ Festival in the amphitheater.  The Oak Canyon Dancers will perform at 2PM on Saturday and 11 PM on Sunday.   The Roach Family Dancers will perform at 2 PM on Sunday. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nBecause the Forest Service has waived the daily activity fee on June 1st and 2nd in honor of Life at Chimney Rock\, the entrance to the festival is Free! Visitors to the Monument will have access to the festival and all the regular amenities at the site. These include self-guided tours of the cultural sites\, access to the nature trail\, and Visitor Plaza. The Monument is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Chimney Rock Interpretive Association Presents: The Mystery of Chaco Canyon-\nA Look into the Archaeoastronomical Connection between Chaco Culture National Historical Park  and Chimney Rock National Monument\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS\nChimney Rock Interpretive Association (CRIA) is proud to present a viewing of The Mystery of Chaco Canyon on Saturday\, September 16th at the Chimney Rock National Monument Amphitheater. CRIA invites you to a unique perspective in a unique place to feel the special connection between Chaco Canyon and Chimney Rock.   More than 1000 years ago the skies threaded these people together.  Why? It is a question that after years of study remains a question\, but also one that invites answers.   An award winning film\, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon by  Anna Sofaer reveals the brilliant astronomy of the ancient Puebloans – how the buildings were located and oriented to the sun and moon to highlight these complex relationships.  This long-awaited sequel to Anna Sofaer’s classic film THE SUN DAGGER\, which changed our perception of America’s earliest Native Americans\, is narrated by Robert Redford and produced by The Solstice Project. \nBefore the viewing of the film\, Dr Erica Ellingson\, Professor at the University of Colorado\, Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences\, will give a special presentation.  Her conversation about the connections between Chaco and Chimney Rock will be the springboard for our understanding of the ancients’ dependence upon the skies.  So simple. So complex. An enigma even today.  Dr. Ellingson is an astrophysicist who delights in using telescopes large and small\, in space and at observatories around the world. Her work includes investigating galaxy clusters\, the evolution of galaxies\, black holes\, and the mysterious cosmological forces of dark matter and dark energy. Her research also includes historical and archaeo-astronomy and she is an editor with the international Journal of Skyscape Archaeology. She also teaches and produces educational programs at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado and is an astronomical consultant with the US National Park Service. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe Chimney Rock National Monument gate will open at 6:00 pm.  Dr. Ellingson will speak at 6:30pm.  The Mystery of Chaco Canyon (56 minutes) will be shown after the lecture.  Tickets are available at www.Recreation.gov for $15 (ages 13 and older) and $8 (ages 6-12.) Kids 5 years and younger are free.  Tickets will also be available at the Chimney Rock National Monument Gift Shop the evening of the event. Light refreshments will be available.  Since this event will take place in the amphitheater\, you may want to bring a cushion or blanket for a more comfortable viewing experience.  A flashlight is also suggested.

SUMMARY:Night Sky: Our Solar System
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\n\n\n\nThis program is timed for when the moon is wonderfully visible in the early night sky. That makes it so we can enjoy the moon and several planets along with some deep sky objects that are beyond our galaxy that we can see with the telescopes. We hope you will appreciate how rare this opportunity is and how fortunate you are to experience it. Treasure it\, along with experiencing an area where the ancient people actually lived and daily and nightly walked around.  There are three parts to our program starting with a live brief history of Chimney Rock\, followed by a video presentation about the ancient people and explaining why astronomy was such an important part of their lives. The third part of the program is a recorded power point presentation that gives understanding of our solar system. There will also be interesting details about our moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nEveryone bring your questions\, fold up chairs\, a flashlight\, blankets or pillows to the Hura Dura\, or paved viewing and seating area. . Remember that at this altitude the nights begin to cool rapidly after sunset\, so an appropriate jacket and sweater will enable you to remain comfortable while you enjoy the majesty of the night sky at Chimney Rock.
