SUMMARY:Flute Music at Twilight Program
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMS DETAILS \nThis program is offered once a month on Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during quiet off-hours of the Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park.  A 2.5-mile drive from the Visitor Center leads to the upper parking lot where this Native American musical program takes place. Prior to the event\, visitors will take a 1/3-mile guided walk along the paved loop through a Mesa Village. The tour provides excellent views of several excavated structures along with discussion of the various aspects of their uses. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nUpon returning to the parking area\, as dusk progresses and stars begin to appear\, visitors will be treated to the haunting melodies of a flute played by our own Charles Martinez. Charles\, a Native American\, makes his flutes and composes his music. This affords a wonderful opportunity to gaze in wonder at the heavenly skies and ponder what significance they had for the Ancestral Puebloans when they looked up at the same night skies 1\,000 years ago. There is a limited amount of seating on wooden and stone benches; so folding chairs are suggested along with flashlights and warm clothing suitable for cool nights. Recommended for ages 4 and up. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. Please note that the tour will begin promptly at the end of the check-in period\, so it will not be possible to accommodate late arrivals. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up\, $10.00 for ages 5-12\, and under 5 are free\, and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation.  Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. To ensure this tour is scheduled\, reservations are strongly recommended. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the tour. \nThis program is rarely at full capacity prior to the event\, and we will accommodate walk-ins if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Tour tickets can be purchased directly from the guide with cash only. Note: if no one has signed up for the tour by online reservation within the allotted time frame\, the tour will not run. In such a case\, walk-ins will not be possible. Refunds will be issued only for cancelled – not modified – tours/programs. No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nDates: \nSaturday evenings: \nJune 13\, July 11\, August 8\, September 19 \nCheck-in: 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. \nProgram:  6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nCapacity: 30 \n\nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Autumnal Equinox Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Autumnal Equinox Tour is offered only once a season at Chimney Rock National Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park. The 2026 event will occur on Tuesday\, September 22. Come to this special place and watch the sun rise over the San Juan Mountains this first morning of fall. With a 360-degree vantage point and the hush of early morning in the wilderness\, the rising sun witnessed from the Great House Pueblo is a most unique experience. Such celestial events were of utmost importance to the Ancient Ones.  We will discuss the significance the equinox played in the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans over 1\,000 years ago\, as well as the Chacoan relationship to this site. \nIt is a 3-mile drive to the trailhead and a 30 to 45-minute uphill hike to the Great House Pueblo. The hike may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). At the end of the trail\, visitors will be rewarded with a panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also enjoy the closest view possible from the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Bring a good flashlight or headlamp and dress appropriately. Sunrise is at 6:45 a.m.\, with the return hike down the trail taking place in the daylight. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archaeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.
SUMMARY:Full Moon Program
DESCRIPTION:This program is offered once a month to coincide with the full moon and provide a unique backdrop in this International Dark Sky Park with a sky unhindered by lights of modern-day civilization. Thus\, check-in times will vary in accordance with the rise time of the moon. \nAbout an hour before moonrise\, visitors will be treated to an informative lecture on topics specific to the Chimney Rock site — ancestral Puebloan culture\, archeoastronomy theories\, area geology\, etc. Then – as the full moon begins to rise – a single flute note follows another and another as you become slowly embraced by the music of Charles Martinez. You’ll be torn between looking west to see the spectacular sunset or focusing on the eastern mountain range to see the first sliver of moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nThe entire program lasts approximately three hours including check-in\, driving to the mesa top (2.5 miles up a winding dirt road with 20-mph speed limit – allow 15 minutes each way) and hiking the Great House Trail. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Please keep in mind that the lecture before the moonrise is approximately 30 minutes in length\, and the hike back down the high mesa occurs after dark. \nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). This program is not suitable for children under 8\, and parents are asked to closely supervise their attending children for the safety of all attendees. Water\, flashlights\, and a blanket or mat for ground seating (no chairs) are recommended. \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each program. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be promptly locked at the end of that time. Tickets are $20.00 per person. Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this program.  This program often sells out; reservations are strongly recommended. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the program.  Walk-ins will be accommodated if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Program tickets can be purchased directly from the Gift Shop.  No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nSpecial Note: Visitors are offered the option to take an early\, guided tour of the Mesa Village Trail before the Full Moon program. This Early Tour/Full Moon Package is $30.00 and is available through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) under the title Early Tour/Full Moon Package. SUMMARY:Lecture: John Kappelman: "The Dating Game: Archeological Dating Methods"
DESCRIPTION:John Kappelman: “The Dating Game: Archeological Dating Methods”\nTuesday\, October 6\, 2026\nThis fascinating lecture explores how archaeologists and scientists determine the age of ancient objects\, structures\, and events—helping us understand what happened\, when\, and why. \nJohn will introduce the geological foundations of dating techniques and examine a range of scientific methods\, including radiometric dating\, paleomagnetism\, archaeomagnetism\, dendrochronology\, and cultural seriation. With special emphasis on Southwestern Ancestral Puebloan sites such as Chimney Rock National Monument\, he will discuss the strengths\, limitations\, and accuracy of each approach—highlighting key methods like carbon dating and dendrochronology that are essential to understanding the region’s past. \nThis one-hour presentation will conclude with a brief Q&A session\, offering attendees a deeper appreciation for the science behind uncovering history. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the fascinating history of Chimney Rock’s peregrine falcons. Donations are welcome. Canned goods for the church’s food pantry are greatly appreciated. \nCRIA’s free Lecture Series offers the opportunity each year for the public and CRIA volunteers to enjoy a speaker whose topic typically relates to southwest archaeology\, archaeoastronomy and/or Chacoan culture. \nThanks to LPEA for the Round Up Foundation Grant Award. This support helps fund our free lecture series\, sharing Chimney Rock National Monument’s cultural and natural significance. \nCRIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers interpretive programs at Chimney Rock National Monument in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the San Juan National Forest. For more information see the CRIA website at www.chimneyrockco.org  or call (970) 731-7133.
