SUMMARY:Full Moon Program
DESCRIPTION:This program is offered once a month to coincide with the full moon and provide a unique backdrop in this International Dark Sky Park with a sky unhindered by lights of modern-day civilization. Thus\, check-in times will vary in accordance with the rise time of the moon. \nAbout an hour before moonrise\, visitors will be treated to an informative lecture on topics specific to the Chimney Rock site — ancestral Puebloan culture\, archeoastronomy theories\, area geology\, etc. Then – as the full moon begins to rise – a single flute note follows another and another as you become slowly embraced by the music of Charles Martinez. You’ll be torn between looking west to see the spectacular sunset or focusing on the eastern mountain range to see the first sliver of moon. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nThe entire program lasts approximately three hours including check-in\, driving to the mesa top (2.5 miles up a winding dirt road with 20-mph speed limit – allow 15 minutes each way) and hiking the Great House Trail. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Please keep in mind that the lecture before the moonrise is approximately 30 minutes in length\, and the hike back down the high mesa occurs after dark. \nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet. The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). This program is not suitable for children under 8\, and parents are asked to closely supervise their attending children for the safety of all attendees. Water\, flashlights\, and a blanket or mat for ground seating (no chairs) are recommended. \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each program. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be promptly locked at the end of that time. Tickets are $20.00 per person. Making a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this program.  This program often sells out; reservations are strongly recommended. Recreation.gov charges a $1.00 reservation fee that is non-refundable. Reservations will be cut off 12 hours prior to the start of the program.  Walk-ins will be accommodated if space is available. They will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and must arrive during the specified check-in time frame. Program tickets can be purchased directly from the Gift Shop.  No refunds will be issued for no-shows. \nSpecial Note: Visitors are offered the option to take an early\, guided tour of the Mesa Village Trail before the Full Moon program. This Early Tour/Full Moon Package is $30.00 and is available through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) under the title Early Tour/Full Moon Package. Check-in times are listed in the Early Tour/Full Moon Package description. \nDates: \nSaturday\, May 30: \n            Check-in:  6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. \n            Program:   7:45 p.m. \n            Moonrise:  8:40 p.m. \nSunday\, June 28: \n            Check-in:  6:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. \n            Program:   7:20 p.m. \n            Moonrise:  8:20 p.m. \n Tuesday\, July 28: \n            Check-in:  6:15 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. \n            Program:   7:30 p.m. \n            Moonrise:  8:30 p.m. \nThursday\, August 27: \n            Check-in:  5:45 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. \n            Program:   7:00 p.m. \n            Moonrise:  8:00 p.m. \nSaturday\, September 26: \n            Check-in:   5:15 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. \n            Program:    6:15 p.m. \n            Moonrise:  7:15 p.m. \nCapacity:  75 \nBOOK NOW\n  \n

SUMMARY:Chimney Rock Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThis fascinating 2.5 hour guided tour explores both the natural and cultural history of the Chimney Rock area. The tour takes you on a journey through geologic time and incorporates the anthropology and archaeology of the Puebloan people who occupied this site more than 1\,000 years ago. Rock types impact structures\, pottery\, tools\, and soil productivity; geologic processes determine the landscape; and\, at Chimney Rock\, play a central role in climate. The relationship between the pillars and the South San Juan Mountains in terms of astronomical observations will be discussed. The tour also covers the key points discussed in the archaeological focused tours like the Great House Tour. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo offers great views and photo opportunities but may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.
Participants will learn how to identify the common rocks and fossils in the area. SUMMARY:Flute Music at Twilight Program
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMS DETAILS \nThis program is offered once a month on Saturday evenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during quiet off-hours of the Monument\, recently designated an International Dark Sky Park.  A 2.5-mile drive from the Visitor Center leads to the upper parking lot where this Native American musical program takes place. Prior to the event\, visitors will take a 1/3-mile guided walk along the paved loop through a Mesa Village. The tour provides excellent views of several excavated structures along with discussion of the various aspects of their uses. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \nUpon returning to the parking area\, as dusk progresses and stars begin to appear\, visitors will be treated to the haunting melodies of a flute played by our own Charles Martinez. Charles\, a Native American\, makes his flutes and composes his music. This affords a wonderful opportunity to gaze in wonder at the heavenly skies and ponder what significance they had for the Ancestral Puebloans when they looked up at the same night skies 1\,000 years ago. There is a limited amount of seating on wooden and stone benches; so folding chairs are suggested along with flashlights and warm clothing suitable for cool nights. Recommended for ages 4 and up. \nTICKETS \nCheck-in is at the Highway 151 entrance gate at the time stated below for each tour. Please adhere to the check-in timeline. The gate will be locked at the end of that time. Please note that the tour will begin promptly at the end of the check-in period\, so it will not be possible to accommodate late arrivals. SUMMARY:Guided Great House Tour
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DETAILS\nThe Guided Great House Tour is a personalized tour that really brings the Monument to life.  It is offered daily at 10:30 a.m. each morning. This guided tour takes visitors 1/3 mile up the Great Pueblo Trail\, making several stops along the way to learn about the ancient Puebloan structures built over 1\,000 years ago and their connection to the Chaco culture located 90 miles southwest of this spot. At the end of the trail\, visitors will enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from atop the mesa ridge. They will also be afforded the closest view possible of the two pinnacles: Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. Peregrine falcons are often sighted on the left side of Companion Rock\, so cameras are a must! \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO\nThe hike up to the Chacoan Great House Pueblo may be difficult for some due to the steep gradient\, uneven footing\, and elevation ending at 7600 feet.  The elevation gain is 200 feet. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and willing to hike mostly uphill for 1/3 mile (and return steeply downhill). \n  \nCheck-in is at the Gift Shop at 10:00 a.m.  The tour begins at 10:30 a.m. The fee is $20.00 for ages 13 and up and $10.00 for ages 5-12 and is considered a non-refundable and non-transferable donation.  Recommended for ages 5 and above due to uneven\, rocky steps and steep drop offs. \nTICKETS\nMaking a reservation through the Recreation.gov website or the call center (877-444-6777) is the only way to guarantee a spot for this tour.
