Interpretive tour guide volunteering involves giving public tours of the archaeological area. Training will be provided in the archaeological material covered by the Volunteer Handbook, interpretation techniques, cultural resource protection law, and radio and safety requirements. The ability to do public speaking is a must. First Aid and CPR Training are a must.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Lead guided interpretive tours for visitors along Chimney Rock's Great Kiva and Great House Trails
  • Provide quality, accurate interpretation of the area's archaeology, natural history, ethnology and history
  • Conduct tours utilizing the Volunteer handbook regulations
  • Assist Cabin Hosts and Day Managers in greeting visitors before tours, giving the same information listed under "Procedures for Visitors"
  • Manage visitor safety and personal safety at all times to prevent accidents or illness
  • Operate radios properly in case of emergencies and for daily operations
  • Know proper procedures concerning emergency situations such as fire or medical situations
  • Work well with the public and co-workers under all circumstances including stressful situations
  • Respond to visitor questions and help direct them to the Cabin for additional info
  • Report any impact or damage to archaeological features or facilities
Physical requirements:
  • Heat and sunlight tolerance
  • Accustomed to high elevations - up to 7600 feet
  • Adequate hearing and vision
  • Ability to walk up to one mile on irregular surfaces, including steady inclines
  • No tendencies of vertigo or fear of heights
  • Ability to bend and do some light lifting

Guided Walking Tour Schedule: 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m.
