The Fire Tower Built in 1939 on the site of what is believed to have been an Ancestral Puebloan firepit, the Chimney Rock Fire Lookout base was built using blocks from the nearby Great House Pueblo and was used by the Forest Service for fire spotting until 1959. The 14'x14' upper story of the lookout then deteriorated and was demolished in 1974 but was rebuilt in modified form in 1987-88 for use in the interpretive program. Today the lookout is the final stop of the Chimney Rock tour and offers guests a magnificent panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains and valleys, and on a lucky day a Peregrine Falcon may be seen. The tower is currently maintained by the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, who conduct the daily site tours in-season.
