Chimney Rock Interpretive Association FULL MOON PROGRAMS AT CHIMNEY ROCK ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA We welcome you to join us as we present our Full Moon Programs for the 2008 season. Watch the full moon rise at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area and listen to the haunting melody of the Native American flute. As an added feature to our Full Moon Program, we are offering a guided tour of the lower archaeological sites at Chimney Rock for an additional nominal fee. Click here for early tour description.Climb the trail up to the Great House Pueblo just before the sun sets on the San Juan Mountains, and learn about the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited the area, the archaeological relationship of Chimney Rock to Chaco Canyon, archaeoastronomy theories, geology of the area and more. Relax as the stars appear in the night sky and the moon rises, and Charles Martinez' beautiful flute notes drift away into the darkness of the night. After the rise of the full moon, you will descend the Puebloan trail by moonlight and our Volunteer Light Brigade, taking with you the beauty and peace experienced by those who inhabited the area 1,000 years ago. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk on a rough trail in darkness. There is a 200-foot elevation gain. Dress for outdoor weather - wind, cold, temperature, etc. Because it will be dark when the program ends, all participants are asked to stay for the entire program. Should inclement weather prevail, the program will be canceled and possibly scheduled for the next evening, or you will be given a rain check that can be used at one of our future Full Moon Programs this season. Please note the following:
The Full Moon Program is sponsored by the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, Inc., in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Ranger District. ![]() |
